PT Pupuk Kujang was established on June 9, 1975, with a total capital of US$ 260 million — comprising a loan from the Government of Iran amounting to US$ 200 million and US$ 60 million in equity from the Indonesian Government. The loan from Iran was fully repaid in 1989. The company’s first fertilizer plant, later named Kujang Plant 1A, had a production capacity of 570,000 tons/year of urea and 330,000 tons/year of ammonia. It was constructed by main contractors Kellogg Overseas Corporation (USA) and Toyo Engineering Corporation (Japan), and completed within 36 months. The plant was inaugurated by the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Soeharto, on December 12, 1978. PT Pupuk Kujang is a subsidiary of PT Pupuk Indonesia Holding Company, a state-owned enterprise (BUMN) in the fertilizer industry. In accordance with the directive from the Director General of Agricultural Infrastructure and Facilities, Ministry of Agriculture (Letter No. 712/SR.130/B.5/8/2011 dated August 23, 2011) regarding the coloring of subsidized urea fertilizer, starting January 1, 2012, PT Pupuk Kujang changed the color of subsidized urea fertilizer to pink. This measure aimed to make it easier to monitor and supervise the distribution. The coloring agents used are food-grade, non-toxic to plants, do not affect the nutrient content of the fertilizer, and comply with Indonesian National Standards (SNI).
